Apprentice Sets Sights on Buying Own Home

After just two years into his apprenticeship Morgan “Rusty” McDonald is planning his next big move…buying his own home in Hamilton.

Rusty had been on the benefit for 7 months when he opted to become a cadet on one of the early Kiwi Can Do courses in Hamilton. It was the first course where the Master Painters Association and the Association Wall and Ceiling Industries (AWCI) combined forces to offer training, mentoring and offers of jobs.

General Manager and director of J L Connolly Ltd John Aukino said Rusty came to his painting company with a positive attitude and quickly proved himself as a reliable and hard-working employee, that resulted in him being offered an apprenticeship.

Rusty said the Kiwi Can Do course woke him up to the possibilities and advantages of having a good job and it got him going again.

“The course made me realise what I was missing in life. It gave me confidence and we were helped by the Kiwi Can Do team in the hard part of actually finding a job,” Rusty said. “Now with a bit of help from my parents I’ve got my sights set on buying a house and you certainly can’t do that if you’re sitting on the dole.”
