Our partnership with Work and Income

Kiwi Can Do is a Work and Income partner specialising in (but not limited to) the construction industry. We are funded by the Ministry of Social Development in support of the Construction Sector Accord.

Our aim is to work closely with employers to support Kiwis wanting to get off the work and income job seekers benefit and into employment. Our courses for Work and Income job seekers helps Kiwis into a career in the civil and construction industry.

The Construction Sector Accord is a combined effort from government and industry helping to create a high-performance construction sector to lead our economic recovery.

Work and Income job seekers

Kiwi Can Do recruit 100 Work and Income job seekers to become trainees each month. We recruit from throughout most of the North Island for our three-week courses.

We train and find construction jobs for example; jobs in building, painting, scaffolding, gib fixing and stopping. Additionally, we provide training for class 2 18-tonne truck licences, along with wheels, tracks and rollers endorsements.

Every week we are selecting fit young Kiwi Work and Income job seekers for our basic three-week, work-ready training. New job seekers are recruited weekly and will start on the following Monday.

Our residential training hubs are in Oratia, West Auckland and Plimmerton, Wellington. We bring trainees to these centres on Mondays and run them home again on Fridays for the weekend. However, city-based trainees are collected each morning and dropped home in the afternoons.

Construction course tutors

We’ve created a ‘Dad’s Army’ of retired or semi-retired Tradies. That is to say, each of them have decades of work and life skills who want to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. For example, our tutors have brought up families, coached sports teams and trained apprentices. Furthermore, our tutors work alongside trainees as mentors in the manner of a favourite uncle or grandfather.

The training is almost exclusively hands-on with the tools. Therefore, there are no paper-based test or books to study. Kiwi Can Do recruit people with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to work and earn a living. Then, we drill into them the importance of turning up to work on time every day, doing what the boss says and putting in an honest day’s work.
