The former Turakina Māori Girls College property, now re-named Te Poho o Tuariki, is a site that Kiwi Can Do has been utilising since 2021. We have been running our training courses from this site, for all those who live in the Whanganui and Rangitikei districts.
The synergy between Kiwi Can Do and Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa, has enabled a collaboration welcomed by both parties, to help further the aspirations to grow, engage and train, not only the Iwi learners, but the wider community. The shared vision is to help our learners into sustainable employment.
We run courses from this site every three months, where most students and tutors find the atmosphere and training facilities of a high calibre. KCD staff have had the pleasure of being welcomed on to this awesome site by Grant Huwyler, CEO and his team.
Currently, we are delivering our Construction Trades Taster courses from this site. In week one, our trainees have been able to erect scaffolding on-site and complete their Site Safe and Working at Heights qualifications, alongside a First Aid course. Then it is on to live-site training for the final two weeks. This hands-on experience enables the trainees to utilise their newly acquired skills, get into a routine of actually going to work, be a team member and gain insightful knowledge of the building industry.
We have built a collaboration with a local company, who has taken on a Palmerston North and Whanganui/Rangitikei cohort for two weeks of live on-site training.
CEO Jason Kennerly from Pro Industries, believes in the Kaupapa of Kiwi Can Do, and together, we have been able to sign an MoU, to be able to work alongside one another in a progressive and uplifting way.
